Dry suburbs as mains burst

2011-11-24 00:00

RESIDENTS in Ashdown and other areas around Pietermaritzburg have been experiencing water cuts since Tuesday morning.

When asked what the problem was, Umgeni Water spokesperson Shami Harichunder said Umgeni had a planned water shutdown on its bulk system on Tuesday from 10:30 am to 10:30 pm.

“The supply to Msunduzi system had since resumed as ours was just a planned shut-down for reasons including maintenance,” said Harichunder.

However, Msunduzi acting municipal manager Thokozani Maseko said the problem was not with his municipality.

He said Umgeni Water had a supply problem as a consequence of the planned shut down, therefore most Pietermaritzburg areas were currently experiencing supply problems.

“Umgeni Water was supposed to have completed the planned works at 2 pm today and now they anticipate 10 pm. If this is the case certain areas will still be without water by tomorrow morning as we have a burst mains due to air in the system, which will compound delays,” said Maseko in a text message.
