Du Preez and Frans Steyn nominated for IRB Player of the Year 2009

2009-11-17 00:00

TWO Springboks, scrumhalf Fourie du Preez, predictably, and Frans Steyn, unexpectedly, are among the seven nominations for the IRB Player of the Year 2009.

Du Preez, named as South Africa’s Player of the Year, is favourite to take the award, but it is the nomination of the unpredictable Steyn, ahead of fellow-South Africans Heinrich Brüssow, Victor Matfield, Morné Steyn and John Smit, which is a major surprise.

The winner will be named during the final weekend of the November Tests in Europe. Schalk Burger took the international award in 2004 and Bryan Habana in 2007.

The IRB Coach of the Year and IRB Team of the Year will be named at the function and Peter de Villiers and the Springboks could complete a clean sweep for South Africa.

The other nominees for Player of the Year for 2009 are Ireland’s Brian O’Driscoll and Jamie Heaslip, Australia’s Matt Giteau, Tom Croft of England and Richie McCaw of New Zealand.
