Duct give the Duzi thumbs up for race

WITH just one week left to go until paddlers hit the water for the next annual Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon, the water quality in the Msunduzi River is satisfactory for paddling.

So says Duzi-uMngeni Conservation Trust (Duct) manager Andrew Booth, who stated that, despite the poor sewerage infrastructure in and around the city, as things stand today the water is looking good.

Although the water quality is not yet a cause for alarm, Booth said the water quality is still vulnerable to a shift in weather conditions.

“Bar any major rainfall between now and the race, things should be fine,” he said.

Booth said the conclusion about the quality of the water for paddling come race day was unanimously reached at a meeting with officials from Duct, the Water Affairs Department and the Msunduzi Municipality yesterday.

He said they have all been working together tirelessly to ensure that the conditions are satisfactory leading up to the big event on Thursday, January 21.

“We’re holding our thumbs in the hope that the status quo remains until then,” he said.
