Dumped baby: murder accused care-giver out on bail

A CARE-GIVER who is charged with attempted murder and child abandonment, was released on bail of R300 in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Nomusa Jennet Ndawonde (38), a care-giver at a Grange crèche, was granted bail by magistrate Reard Abrahams.

The charge sheet alleges that Ndawonde tried to kill her one-day-old baby and that she abandoned the child in White Road in the Grange on Monday morning.

Passing schoolchildren found the the child wrapped in a black plastic bag. When they noticed that it was moving they notified community members who called the police and paramedics.

The three-kilogram baby girl is reportedly doing well in Edendale Hospital.

The mother was arrested on Tuesday following a story in The Witness asking members of the public to help the police with information on the whereabouts of the mother.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said they received an anonymous tip-off from the community and detectives immediately proceeded to the area.

The suspect was arrested and interviewed. She was taken to the district surgeon for examination where it was confirmed that she had given birth.

Jeevan said police are warning mothers who dump their babies that they will be arrested with the help of communities.

Ndawonde will appear in court on October 14.
