Dumped refuse upsets residents

2010-01-21 00:00

RESIDENTS living near Shortts Retreat are feeling the effects of the problems at the Msunduzi Municipal landfill site as the public, allegedly fed up with the problems there, has started dumping waste in a vacant plot in the area.

The residents say that for the past several months, the vacant land has been turned into a municipal dump by people who either do not want to pay for dumping at the landfill site or who have encountered the problems that plague the landfill site.

The unfenced property, which is above Polly Shorts, is littered with sawdust, house refuse, tyres, old telephones and skins and intestines of sheep.

One of the concerned residents, who gave his name as A. Taylor, said that for the past few months, numerous trucks have been dumping waste in the area. “These trucks come here at least five times a week to dump the waste.”

“The situation is actually becoming ridiculous now because, if you dump at the municipal dump, you pay R28 and here they are dumping for free.”

Chaos erupted at the landfill site recently when workers there downed tools. Mountains of rubbish piled up at the site as workers complained they had only one machine with which to move the rubbish further up into the site, where it is supposed to be mashed into the ground.
