Dumped waste: Council has a plan

2011-10-14 00:00

THE Msunduzi Municipality says it has a plan to clean up garden refuse sites, which are still choked with domestic refuse that was dumped weeks ago during the municipal workers’ strike.

Yesterday acting municipal spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said administrator Sibusiso Sithole has approved a contingency plan to clear the sites following an outcry by residents.

“The sanitary facilities at the garden sites are currently not in place, the reason being that the contract expired last year, but a new contractor has been appointed and will commence soon.”

Work will start at the Woodlands garden site today then on the Ritchie Road garden site and in other areas, Madonda added.

Residents frustrated by empty promises by municipal officials that the sites will be cleared have threatened to take the council to court over the health hazard.
