Dumper torches stinking South Road tip

2015-03-18 00:00

A CLOUD of smoke blanketed the upper Northdale area after garbage at the South Road dump was set on fire yesterday.

According to witnesses, a man came into the dump and, after disposing of his garbage, poured petrol on the waste around him and set it alight.

The fire spread quickly, with raging flames engulfing the garden refuse that had been piling up over the past month.

Fire fighters were on the scene from 5 am yesterday and worked throughout the day to prevent the fire from starting up again.

One fireman, who would not be named, said the main concern was the smoke, which was affecting residents in the area.

One resident, Jayshree Naidoo, said the rubbish had built up to such an extent that it was beginning to slide to the roadside.

“Sometimes you can’t blame people for doing this because they are left with no choice after the dirt has accumulated for such a long time.

“But it is sad to see the waste of so much water and the efforts from fire fighters,” she said.

“Nobody has picked up the dirt here for the past month. The entire area stinks so badly that sometimes when you’re driving past it you want to vomit.”

The dump is only intended for garden refuse, but many people dump household waste and other rubbish there too.
