Duo dominate from start to finish

LEN Jenkins and Hank McGregor showed clear domination in the first Hansa Powerade Duzi seeding race of the season, winning the Hansa Powerade Ozzie Gladwin by just over a minute from Ant Stott and Michael Mbanjwa.

In spite of a very bad start, where the noise of the TV helicopter masked the sound of the “Go!”, the pair were first into the portage at the end of the 20-minute paddle on the flat waters of Albert Falls dam. At this stage they were in the company of Stott and Mbanjwa and the sprinting duo of Mike Arthur and Nick Stubbs, with Wayne Wilson and Marc Holtzhausen about 50 metres off the bunch. From then on they led the way over the three-kilometre portage to the Albert Falls weir and all the way down to the finish at Thornvale farm.

There were two surprises in the top 10 with Chris Birkett and Michael Patrick taking an excellent fourth place and sub-veterans Warren Valentine and Marc Germiquet taking fifth. Change a Life paddlers from Martin Dreyer’s project took sixth, eighth and ninth.

Hillary Pitchford and Abie Adie teamed up in the women’s race for a comfortable win and an excellent 17th place overall. They were over 11 minutes clear of second-placed Donna Winter and Angelique Mulder, with Tiffany Kruger and U16 Kerry Segal from ’Toti in the third spot.

Michaelhouse paddlers Owen Gandar and Matthew Dean won the boys’ race a little over two minutes clear of the U16 combination of Maritzburg College’s Donavan Wewege and Kearsney’s Andrew Adie, who held off a strong challenge from the Lambethe Canoe Club team of Mzamo Zondi and Mmeli Cele.

A number of the top girls were paddling with the seniors, leaving just four all-girl crews in the race. Wykeham Collegiate’s Lindsay Davis and Epworth’s Jenna Starr took the honours in fifth place overall among the women, less than a minute ahead of Epworth’s Tamika Haw and Brittany Petersen, with another Epworth crew of Caitlin Millar and Hazel Little a distant third.

The 30 km C-class race was the first of seven Dusi seeding races, as well as the KZN trial for a team to the SA K2 River Championships on the Vaal Marathon in Gauteng next weekend. The team will be announced shortly. In line with the trend over the whole of the current river racing season, the race showed a strong growth over the 2008 event with 641 entrants, over 100 more than last year. This confirmed the event hosted, by Natal Canoe Club, as the largest one-day race in the country.

The field took full advantage of the 12cumec water release arranged by Umgeni Water and the excellent prizes, lucky draws and general event organisation presented by NCC and their sponsors, Hansa and Powerade.
