Durban Raiders do the double on midlands rivals

2008-03-03 00:00

THERE were two exciting finals between the Durban and Pietermaritzburg-based provincial teams in the senior indoor hockey tournament at the YMCA on Saturday evening.

The KZN Raiders men and close rivals KZN Midlands were involved in a cliffhanger in which the Durban-based Raiders reversed the result of the pool match to emerge as champions with a 4-2 victory after leading 3-2 at half-time. And it was former Midlands star Geoff Abbott who played a key role in the Raiders victory, scoring field goals in the fourth minute and then again just before half-time to net 50% of the champions’ goals.

The women’s final between Raiders and Midlands also went to the Durban girls by the same score as the men’s showdown, 4-2, with top goal scorer Cindy Botha (tournament tally of 18) netting a field goal a minute before half-time.

Men – semi-finals: Raiders 5 WP 3; Midlands A 6 Midlands B 2; third/fourth: Midlands B 6 WP 4; fifth/sixth: Mynahs 10 EP 5. Women – semi-finals: Raiders 4 Mynahs 0; Midlands A 5 KZN C 1; third/fourth: Mynahs 4 KZN C 0; fifth/sixth: Midlands B 3 Midlands C 0.
