Durban Spar ladies’ race attracts 15 000 runners

2011-06-17 00:00

THE only race this weekend is the Durban Spar ladies’ race, which has attracted close to 15 000 athletes for the 10 km or five kilometre distances.

Last-minute entries are being taken at SunZone at Suncoast Casino today and tomorrow from 10 am to 5 pm, and each entrant receives a T-shirt and Spar goodie bag.

The 10 km starts from the Durban Country Club side of NMR Avenue, outside the athletics track, at 8 am while the five kilometre commences from the trackside of NMR Avenue at 8.30 am.

Both routes go north to Blue Lagoon before providing spectacular views of Durban’s Golden Mile and the harbor, as participants run down Snell Parade to turn past the swimming pool.

The five kilometre route finishes at the stadium.

The 10 km participants head to the Sahara Kingsmead Cricket Oval and central city before returning up NMR Avenue to end in People’s Park where the stunning arch of the Moses Mabhida Stadium provides the background to the finish line.

There is R10 000 for the winner and prize money down to 10th place, with extra awards for the age-group runners and bonus incentives for those who lead the grand prix standings at the end of the five-event series.

Participants are advised to go to the Moses Mabhida parking area, opposite People’s Park and Suncoast Casino, and line up at the start early — at least 45 minutes prior to the start. Access to the free parking is from Argyle Road and every finisher will receive a breakfast pack.

The KZN team to the SA half-marathon championships to be held in Motherwell outside Port Elizabeth on July 2 is expected to be named only on Monday.

Once again the province leaves the athletes minimal preparation time to be at peak fitness and this will no doubt show in the performances.

That said, the flat, fast course provides an ideal opportunity for the athletes to achieve personal bests.
