Durban: Taxi drivers to be fined for noise

2009-09-10 00:00

TAXI operators who hoot unnecessarily, play loud music and cause a public disturbance with their vehicles now face hefty fines, an initiative by the Ethekwini Transport Authority to clean up Durban’s public transport system.

At the launch at the Durban City Hall, the head of Ethekwini Transport Authority, Victor Baloyi, said that the “No Noise” campaign was implemented after the city received complaints from the residents in the city and townships about the high noise levels from taxis.

Baloyi said the campaign idea started three years ago, but had to be discussed with the taxi industry before it was implemented.

He added that they wanted to train taxi drivers before enforcing the fines.

“We are happy that it has been launched. We now need to educate passengers,” he said.
