Durban artist on the hunt for pictures of mural he painted in 1960

DURBAN artist and photographer Barry Comber is on the hunt for pictures of a mural he painted when he was a pupil at Durban High School (DHS) in 1960.

A drawing that Comber sketched when he was planning the mural some 53 years ago, recently came to light.

“Chris Jeffery, a school buddy and life-long friend now living in Johannesburg, had kept the rolled up drawing in a box alongside newspaper cuttings, music scores and a stack of rock ’n roll records and other memorabilia,” Comber said.

“Everything in the box was part of a sixties time capsule we had put together.

“I’m delighted to have the cartoon back. The mural was the largest painting I ever did.”

Unfortunately, Comber has no record of his work and in the intervening years the DHS building that housed the mural has been demolished.

Comber is now hoping that past pupils or teachers from the school, who might have photographs that include the mural, will get in touch with him. Anyone who can help, is asked to phone 082 825 4435.
