Durban beachfront the site for fan park

IT HAS been confirmed that Durban’s official Fifa World Cup Fan Park will be located on Durban’s New Beach, which will be at the very heart of the remodelled beachfront.

The Durban Fan Park will be showing all World Cup matches live on its big screens, with the aim of creating a party-like atmosphere throughout the tournament. It will accommodate 25 000 people.

Construction of the fan park has already begun, though erection of the main stage and the big screens are only scheduled to begin in about two weeks.

Julie May Ellingson, head of the strategic projects unit and 2010 programme for the eThekwini Municipality, expects the fan park to be completed a few days before the the first game.

“There are numerous elements to the fan park from an infrastructure perspective. These include the installation of stages, big screens, food and beverage concessions, merchandising, media offices, medical stations, a venue operating centre, ablutions, hospitality areas and fencing,” she said.

“In addition, one has a number of operational issues, such as the development of a full entertainment programme, including stage acts and children’s programmes.”

Visitors to the fan park can expect to see an array of local bands and other entertainment acts live on stage. Food and beverages, including alcohol, will be on sale. The fan park will be open to all members of the public — and entrance is free.

Durban will also have two other public viewing areas, one in uMlazi and the other in Kwamashu, each accommodating 10 000 people.
