Durban celebrates sexual diversity

2014-06-30 00:00

Hundreds of people attended the Durban Pride Festival held at King’s Park stadium in Durban on Saturday.

Organisers said the festival is ‘an expression and celebration of sexual diversity within the city and a commemoration of all the lives lost as a result of discrimination and oppression on grounds of sex, gender and sexual orientation.

It is a public campaign to express resistance to accept, and outrage over, the growing number of senseless abuse, violence, rape and murder of people identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, butch, femme and queer in our communities. The festival encourages lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people to rise above the discrimination, hate crimes, gay-bashing, corrective rape and other injustices and challenges friends and families to rise above fear and prejudice and promote equality and dignity for all.’ The event included a parade, a concert and poetry sessions.
