Durban dancer through to ‘SA’s Got Talent’ grand finale

2009-11-12 00:00

HEARING-IMPAIRED hip-hop dancer Darren Rajpal has made it into the grand finale of the inaugural SA’s Got Talent, which will be broadcast live tonight, but KwaZulu-Natal’s other representatives, the Port Shepstone-based singing group Umbumbano, failed to advance.

Nineteen-year-old Rajpal, from Mayville in Durban, received the most public votes — and the complete backing of judge Shado Twala, who said she wanted him to win the competition — in Tuesday’s semi-final and automatically went through to the final.

But fellow contestant, eight-year-old singing prodigy Cleo Filander, from Vereeniging, who has twice reduced judge Ian von Memerty to tears during the course of the reality contest, secured her place in the final when Twala and Randall Abrahams eventually gave her their backing.

Rajpal and Filander will join Monday night’s winners, beat boxer George Avakian and guitarist Louwtjie Rothman, and two other semi-finalists from last night’s semi-final, in the finale where they will compete to win the R250 000 prize.

Rajpal, who dances to the musical vibrations he feels, says that, should he win the competition, he will start a music school where other hearing-impaired youngsters can learn to dance. And he’s counting on KZN residents to help him do just that.

The SA’s Got Talent finale will be broadcast live at 7.30 pm on SABC2.
