Durban doctor and seven others arrested for defrauding insurance companies

2012-07-19 00:00

EIGHT people, including a doctor from Phoenix, were arrested yesterday by the Durban Commercial Crime unit for defrauding insurance companies.

Police said investigations had found that the doctor had certified the death of a Mr Mundllal when there was no such death.

“In 2010, a claim of R500 000 was lodged to 1Lifedirect insurance company after an alleged death of Mr Mundllal. The whole amount was paid into a Nedbank account belonging to a 25-year-old woman from Phoenix,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

Police found out that another woman from Phoenix had insured the life of the alleged deceased through 1Lifedirect.

“Investigations also revealed that when the alleged deceased was registered as dead at Home Affairs, an ID of a 20-year-old man was used,” said Mdunge.

Police were also led to a couple who run a funeral parlour in Amaoti, who had signed a form certifying a dead person who was never in their mortuary.

”A statement made by the woman who owns the parlour differed from the one made by the doctor in terms of the cause of death, saying the man had died of a heart attack, while the doctor said he had died of cancer.”

The arrested suspects, between the ages of 20 and 60, will appear before the Durban Commercial Crime Court today, facing charges of fraud. Police say further investigations are on, and more arrests are imminent.
