Durban fashion designers gear up for fashion week

2013-10-02 00:00

DURBAN fashion designers from the KZN Fashion Council (KZNFC) will be putting their best frock forward when they display their collections on the runway at the South African Fashion Week Autumn/Winter Collection 2014 this Friday.

The council announced the participants after they had to complete a Fashion Design Capacity Building Programme.

Showcasing their designs on the runway will be Casey Jeanne Walters, Larisa Terblanche, Ludwig Bezuidenhout, Jacqueline Emmanuel and Thembeka Vilakazi. The designers who will participate in the Buyers Lounge are Avisha Nandkumar, Claire Mackenzie, Mthunzi Mthembu, Sfiso Sabelo and Sarojini Moodley.

Through the programme, the KZNFC aimed to develop and mentor designers to a level where they can manage sustainable businesses. Designers were given the opportunity to bridge the gap between their design skills and business knowledge.

Fashionista Jacqueline Emmanuel said she was honoured to be a part of South African Fashion Week.

“It’s an absolute honour to be chosen and to be a part of this. The level of workmanship and talent of the competitors have been extremely high and incredibly dedicated. It is an amazing opportunity, and thank you to the KZN Fashion Council team and SAFW for the opportunity. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing people will see months of hard work being shown on a huge platform like this.”

“We [the designers] are all very similar in the sense that we all are hard-working and we love what we do. My designs are simple but well-tailored and made with individual attention to detail, and made of the finest fabric,” she said of her designs.

Breakout Durban designer Avisha Nandkumar may not be showcasing her collection on the ramp, but certainly feels excited to be a part of Fashion Week.

“This is my first retail line. I am primarily an evening, bridal and Eastern wear designer. This was a huge change for me that therefore caused me to struggle a bit.

“However, I am excited and scared because it’s the first time I am part of such a huge event. I was one of the lucky ones to be picked, it wasn’t an easy course.

“For myself, I found it really challenging,” said Nandkumar.
