Durban hosts first Aerobatics GP

SPECTACULAR action is promised at the first Durban Land, Sea and Air Festival which starts today on the Durban beachfront and runs until Sunday. And admission is free.

The festival’s main attraction is the never-before-seen-in-South-Africa Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics, where the best South African and international pilots will race, twist, turn and be pushed to the extreme as they blitz through multi-storey pylons placed on the beachfront piers to complete an aerobatics routine.

A regional contest, using the ranking system used by the National Championships score, was conducted to choose the South African participants, who will be competing against champion pilots from around the world.

“Out of the five international pilots competing, three are the best aerobatics pilots in the world,” said festival organiser Brian Emmenis.

The South African Navy will bring a frigate and a submarine, along with the navy dive team and the precision drill team (band), while festival-goers will also be treated to a variety of displays by the SAPS and various watersport activities.

Live music, air-themed movies and other land activities are expected to keep the entertainment going well into the night. “We have been planning the festival since mid-2013 and are very excited to bring this event to Durban,” said Emmenis.

“Nowhere else in the country are people able to watch so many exhilarating displays over and in the sea.”
