Durban: man goes missing at Blue Lagoon

2011-08-08 00:00

A MAN in his twenties went missing yesterday morning after he jumped into the water at the Blue Lagoon river mouth in Durban.

Thulisa Notyandela (25) was sent to fetch water, said his friend, Xolisa Mbadlana.

He was preparing to swim and jumped into the water, but never surfaced.

Andre Fletcher, deputy station commander of the National Sea Rescue Institute in Durban, said a search was launched by a police search-and-rescue unit.

“[Notyandela] is believed to [have] gone missing in the surf after reportedly been swept out to sea through the river mouth, while swimming in the river,” said Fletcher.

“An extensive search has revealed no sign of the man who is missing and feared to have drowned. Police will continue an ongoing search,” he said.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the man is still missing and an inquest docket can be opened only after the body is found.
