Durban musicians nominated for four Samas

DURBAN musicians Zakes Bantwini and Professor each received four MTN SA Music Award (Sama) nominations this week.

Bantwini’s Love, Light & Music is competing in the category for best urban dance album against DJ Kent, Giggs Superstar, Liquideep and Tumelo.

Professor’s University of Kalawa Jazmee will compete the for best kwaito album category against Durban legend L’vovo Derrango (Irresistable), Mandoza, Sosha and Thebe.

Bantwini and Professor will compete in the categories for male artist of the year and album of the year. Their singles Bum Bum (Bantwini) and Imoto (Professor) are up for record of the year. Their competition in this category includes Black Coffee’s Mama (featuring Ringo) and DJ Cindo’s Ngisemthanda (featuring Joocy, DJ Tira and Dr Duda).

Other KwaZulu-Natal nominees include:

• Nibs van der Spuy — Live at the Vagabond Café (best jazz-instrumental-popular classical DVD);

• Heels over Head — Could It Be (best contemporary jazz album);

• John Ellis — My Own Way Home (best rock album);

• Jae — Inner Voice (Best global dance album);

• Verd — Verd (best R’nB/neo-soul album);

• Soul Brothers — Thul’ Ubheke (best mbhaqanga album);

• Bhekumuzi Luthuli — Imali Yabelungu; Ichwane Lebhaca — Omama Bengani; Mfiliseni Magubane — Iqhalaqhala; and Thokozani Langa — Sthanda Ifamily (best maskandi album);

• Ntombi Ngcobo — African Sexy (best urban pop album);

• Mthunzi Namba — Mercy Live In Durban (best African contemporary gospel album); and

• Deborah — Awunasabelo (best African traditional gospel album).

The Samas will take place on May 20 and 21 at Montecasino, Johannesburg.
