Durban: seven killed in shootings

POLICE Commissioner Bheki Cele has condemned the killing of six people in KwaMashu, Durban, on Christmas Day.

Cele’s spokeswoman, Nonkululeko Mbatha, said that at around 11.30 pm on Friday, about 11 friends were enjoying themselves in the Ngwane home in H Section when three men entered through the kitchen door.

The suspects, armed with R5 and AK47 assault rifles, opened fire, fatally wounding six people — four men and two women, all in their early twenties — said Mbatha. Three other men were wounded.

“The police will spend sleepless nights to make sure that they bring the culprits to book,” said Mbatha.

Meanwhile, a man was killed and another critically injured in a armed robbery in Phoenix, Durban, on Christmas Day, Netcare911’s Jeff Wicks said.

It is alleged that three armed men entered the house, confronted the two men and demanded cash and valuables. A struggle ensued and the robbers produced firearms.

Both men were shot several times. One died at the scene and the other was rushed to a Phoenix hospital.
