A 40-YEAR-OLD taxi operator was shot dead in Durban on Thursday afternoon.
Police said Ntuthuko Mthembu was found dead in his vehicle in Harry Gwala Road, Westville. He had gunshot wounds to his chest and face.
The motive for the killing is unknown. A case of murder was opened and no arrests had been made, said police.
They said a post-mortem would be conducted to determine the number of shots fired and the type of weapon used.
The shooting has raised concern that it was related to ongoing taxi violence.
In March, two people were shot dead in Durban in what was believed to be a dispute over a taxi route from Durban to the Eastern Cape. Two shootouts in March and April in Ballito, in which a bystander was killed, are also thought to be linked to a taxi war.
