Durban theatre hosts comedy-musical ‘Guys and Dolls’

2007-12-04 00:00

GUYS and Dolls, hailed as the all-time “perfect comedy musical”, is running at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre until January 6. When it was launched on Broadway, it ran for five years and an incredible 1 200 performances and was later made into a film starring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Vivian Blaine and Jean Simmons.

The Durban production is presented by BGM Productions, by arrangement with Dalro and produced by 19-year-old theatre whiz-kid, Bradley Marshall. It is directed by Catherine Mace and the cast is headed by Janna Ramos-Violante (Adelaide) and Donnagh Roberts (Sarah) with Quincey Fynn (Nathan) and Lyle Buxton (Sky). Also featured are Clive Gumede, Liam Magner, Iain Robinson, Michael Gritten and dancers Denya Maslen, Londiwe Dhlomo, Janine Bennewith and Pamela Grey.

This time last year, Marshall was a matric student at Northwood, but he is not fazed by the challenge of producing the show. “I do get scared when I have to consider the budget but I think my confidence comes from being on stage from the moment I could talk,” he says. “I did three youth mentorship productions with Themi Venturas and I was in the Unilever Young Performers shows. Earlier this year I was on the production team for Annie.”

With technical and management input that includes Mace, Mark Hawkins (choreographer), Callie Thomson (music director), Andrew Verster (costumes), Michael Broderick (lighting design) and Charon Williams-Ross (vocal director), Marshall boasts that he has “a winning team”.
