Durban to host World 100 km championships

2013-02-23 00:00

DURBAN will be host for the World 100 km championships in October or November of this year.

James Evans, the president of Athletics South Africa made this announcement at the conclusion of the first ever AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) regional race organisers conference held yesterday in Pietermaritzburg.

“The championships were originally scheduled for Jeju, Korea, but their recent withdrawal then saw the IAU, [International Association of Ultra-runners], take up South Africa’s offer to host the event,” said Evans, adding that details have yet to be worked out.

Evans suggested that local runners could break the world records of 6:13:33 (men) and 6:33:11 (women).

The World Championship event is expected to attract runners and teams from six continents.

The last championship was held in Seregno Italy in April 2012. — Own Correspondent.
