Durban toddler falls to death

2015-02-27 00:00

JOHN Khumalo was in shock and distraught after his three-year-old grandson plunged eight storeys to his death from a Durban flat yesterday.

Three-year-old Shelton da Calia peered out and fell from the window of his home, on Diakonia Avenue in the Durban CBD.

Khumalo said Shelton had never played near the window before and he had lost his balance before he fell over.

“We are very shocked, it is so unfortunate. He was a very good boy.

“He was always playing with people, laughing and having fun. We will remember him as a well-behaved boy with a sense of humour,” he said.

KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said they tried to resuscitate Shelton but despite their best efforts, which lasted over 20 minutes, the boy didn’t respond and was declared dead.

Shelton’s mother was not with him at the time and is currently working in Mozambique.
