DUSI Canoe Marathon champion Andrew Birkett was named Maritzburg Varsity’s Sportsman of the Year during the 49th annual Johnson & Johnson UKZN Pietermaritzburg sports banquet held at Victoria Country Club last night.

Birkett’s victory in the Dusi K1 event this year in South Africa’s premier river race won him the Dusi double in consecutive years after he had clinched the K2 title last year in partnership with Jason Graham.

There was no sportswoman of the year named, but basketball player Mbali Ngubane won the Female Sports Achiever of the Year accolade.
