E-mail about MF ‘just a hoax’

2015-01-27 00:00

A HOAX e-mail stating that Minority Front leader Shameen Thakur-Rajbansi has been dethroned is making the rounds.

The 300-word e-mail has a logo that is identical to the MF logo. Titled “Govender [Ravi] set to be named interim MF Leader”, the e-mail states that a three-year plot to oust Thakur-Rajbansi had finally succeeded.

MF spokesperson councillor Patrick Pillay, whose name is appended to the statement, confirmed that the e-mail was a hoax.

Pillay denied being an author of the document.

He said the mail, which came from a Gmail address, was mischievous and sought to create division in the party.

Pillay said he was inundated with calls from various media houses questioning and wanting to verify the information.

The e-mail reads: “A battle that has been raging for the past three years within the Minority Front will draw to a close as Deenadayalan Govender, Shameen Thakur-Rajbansi’s arch nemesis, rises as the leader of the Minority Front.”

It adds that this situation came about after a national executive meeting was called last Friday, where party signatories were changed.

It quotes an unnamed councillor saying that “Thakur-Rajbansi operated the MF according to the caste system and looked down upon those who formed part of other Indian-ethnic subgroups”.

It says that the MF constitution contains two important clauses: “To ensure that no one is discriminated against on the grounds of their race and opposing all forms of racial and other discrimination which undermine the civil liberty and social justice of the individual”.

Pillay said he did not know who was behind the e-mail. “They want to pursue their own aspirations at our expense. They want to make it seem like we are not focused,” he said.
