EEF and DA agree: the minister of Communications is in contempt

CAPE TOWN — Another member of cabinet is accused of holding the Public Protector (PP) in contempt.

Communications Minister Faith Muthambi yesterday morning played the sub judice card when she was called upon to answer to Parliament on the PP’s findings against the SABC and its contentious COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

The PP had among other issues found Motsoeneng lied about his qualifications and recommended a COO had to be appointed, in a report in February.

Motsoeneng, then acting COO, was permanently appointed in July. One of the PP’s recommendations was that a “suitably qualified” COO should be appointed. Muthambi said Motsoeneng’s appointment met these recommendations.

DA MP Gavin Davis wanted to know how it was possible that Motsoeneng was suitably qualified, given that the PP had found he had lied about his matric certificate and the original advertisement for the post required a tertiary qualification. Muthambi said the SABC has proven that Motsoeneng did not lie about not having a matric certificate.

Davis said if Muthambi differed from the PP, she was free to contest the matter in court, but she was not free to ignore the issue. Muthambi used the DA’s application to have the appointment of Motsoeneng set aside as excuse not to answer questions.

EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said she could not hide behind the sub judice rule in this instance, nor ignore the PP.

“Let is dismiss this meeting and admit we don’t have teeth to call the minister to account,” said a defeated EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi. Muthambi smiled.
