EFF calls for murder probe

2014-04-23 00:00

THE Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in KwaZulu-Natal have called for an investigation into the death of one of their members, allegedly at the hands of police, in Underberg last week.

Nkosinathi Mnyende, of Himeville, and a fellow EFF member were allegedly approached by Underberg police last Thursday, said party spokesperson Reggie Ngcobo.

He said the pair, who were wearing the EFF’s trademark red berets, were accused by the officers of “spreading the EFF in the area”.

Ngcobo said police chased the pair and Mnyende was caught, while his friend escaped. “He [Mnyende] was paraded at many places and humiliated by the police as a way of showcasing what would be done to people who are joining the EFF,” he said. Mnyende’s body was later found with bruises.

Ngcobo said a murder charge was opened and the matter was referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The IPID said it was investigating the incident.
