EP top of the Provincial T20 Challenge log after nail-bitting victory over KZN Inland

2011-11-21 00:00

EASTERN Province wicketkeeper Sizwe Masondo hit a six off the last ball of the Provincial T20 Challenge match against KZN Inland at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday to clinch a nail-biting three-wicket victory and take the Port Elizabeth-based team to five wins from five outings at the top of the log.

The defeat was a crushing blow to winless Inland, who fought their way back into the game after EP were seemingly cruising to victory.

However, very poor catching and lapses in their ground fielding cost Inland dearly and was the difference on the day.

Two Inland players stood out — Divan van Wyk, who batted sensibly to put his side back in the game, and Tabraiz Shamsi, who bowled very well to help get his side so close to victory.

At Kingsmead, KZN Coastal were involved in an even tighter T20 bash, their encounter with South Western Districts being tied, which did much to make up for the frustrations of sitting in the pavilion for the greater part of the rain-ruined three-day match.

In the Provincial 3-Day Challenge match that ended at the PMB Oval on Saturday, Inland’s first innings collapsed dramatically from an overnight 106 for two to 186 all out.

This was in reply to Eastern Province’s 331 for four declared. Crucially, Inland avoided the follow-on by five runs and the match ultimately ended in a draw, too much time having been lost to the weather.

Inland next play Namibia at the PMB Oval from December 1 to 4.
