East Coast Radio pits daredevil against sharks to find KZN’s bravest woman

2009-08-26 00:00

WOULD you swim with sharks for R10 000?

Kajal Parsuram, a 20-year-old from Chatsworth, did just that for East Coast Radio’s “Durban’s No. 1 Dare”, a competition to find the city’s bravest woman.

Parsuram was selected as one of five women who will carry out the most demanding dares to win a prize of R10 000 in cash and a complete makeover for her and her three best friends.

Each woman will have to carry out a dare, which will be filmed and posted on the radio station website.

The five will have their hair styled by Terry Scott, with make-up by Lindsay Nixon and styling and outfits by Suzie Mockridge of Max institute of Fashion, and will be driven in a limousine to a seaside dinner at Bean Bag Bahia.

Yesterday, Parsuram, who is terrified of deep water, donned a wetsuit and spent 15 minutes swimming with tiger sharks at Aliwal Shoal on the south coast.

Parsuram was assisted by Mark and Gail Addison of Blue Wilderness Expeditions, a company that specialises in introducing local and international tourists to marine creatures.

“It was absolutely awesome. The experience of a lifetime,” said an excited Parsuram shortly after her dive.

She said that the while the 15 minutes in the water felt like “forever”, she enjoyed watching the sharks swim around her.

“They were beautiful. Some even brushed up against me. I enjoyed floating there, but I’m not sure that I would do it again,” she added.

Parsuram said her family and friends were very supportive and she hoped she would get many votes.

Gail Addison said they enjoy helping marine enthusiasts meet the “incredible sharks”on the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

“We have always worked cage-free with all our animals, be they crocs, white sharks, tiger sharks or blacktip sharks, and we firmly believe that this is the most positive way forward in busting the ‘monster’ myth,” she said.

Voting opens next week on www.ecr.co.za for the woman you think deserves most to win.
