Easter roads: MEC launches safety campaign

2013-03-19 00:00

THE MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, launched the Easter road safety campaign at Marianhill toll plaza yesterday.

During the holiday, Mchunu said, the roads would be busy with migrant workers returning home and Christians travelling to places of worship.

“By this launch we are reviewing Transport’s road safety plan and adjusting it to suit this particular period.”

The theme for this year’s campaign is “The year of accelerating people’s activism against road accidents”.

Mchunu said that while the number of fatalities on the roads is high, public transport operators in the province had heeded the appeal to their consciences as individuals to contribute to safety and well-being.

“We are now convinced that we can realise the objective of reducing road fatalities by 50% at the end of the United Nations Decade of Road Safety in 2020,” he said.

Mchunu warned pedestrians not to walk along the province’s roads while drunk.
