Eastwood: Woman commits suicide

2010-11-08 00:00

A 24-YEAR-OLD woman from Thembalihle, near Eastwood, committed suicide in the early hours of Saturday morning after she thought she had killed her two children.

She was found hanging from a tree in an open field in the area with the two children 40 metres away from her.

According to the police, the women, whose name has been withheld, had had an altercation with her husband earlier that day.

The woman then left their home with her two children, boys — one aged two and another aged six months. She allegedly tried to kill them by hacking them with a panga.

The older child was found with an open wound on his head believed to have been made with a panga.

And the younger boy was found with bruises on his body that are believed to have been made with the blunt side of the panga.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said it is believed that the mother wanted to kill the children, and when she thought she had, she took her life.

She said, however, the children survived and were taken to hospital where they are believed to be in a serious but stable condition.

She said no foul play was suspected and the police were continuing with their investigation.
