Eastwood tension boils over

2008-10-21 00:00

Protesters who were raising concerns about a low-cost house for a disabled woman in Cinderella Park yesterday were verbally abused by a member of the ward 34 committee in the presence of the ward councillor, Mzwakhe Dladla.

The exchange of words followed a protest led by Eastwood Community Forum chairman Fred Wegner and members of his forum, who were protesting against the building low- cost house for Eunice Duma.

The 44-year-old Duma is unemployed and disabled.

Wegner said that Lloyd Wiltwer, the ward committee’s safety and security officer, verbally abused the secretary of the forum, Cynthia Fortein, and threatened her with assault. Wiltwer threatened to sue if his name was published.

“They were throwing political remarks at us, calling us members of the IFP, whereas we were fighting for the rights of a disabled ANC member,” said Wegner.
