Eclectic Afro-fusion

THE Maritzburg Musicians’ Club is hosting a unique and exciting evening featuring some eclectic local musicians on February 8. The featured act for the evening is one of Durban’s favourites, Maisha, alongside new local outfit, Nosi and The Zulus.

Six-piece Afro-fusion band Maisha hails from Durban, and is made up of Tresor Riziky (lead vocals and acoustic guitar), Rod Nichols (lead guitar and vocals), Jon Pimenta (percussion), Mthobisi Mthalane (keyboards), Paul Cassels (drums) and Mbuso Sokhela (bass).

The band has shared the stage with artists such as Eddy Grant, Freshlyground and Prime Circle. Their first music video, titled Afrika Unite, is on YouTube, and the eclectic mix in their musical repertoire will appeal to a wide mix of music lovers, with a sound that is vibrant and crosses a range of genres from its Afro-fusion base.

Nosi and the Zulus is a five-piece band which consists of Nosi Zulu on vocals, Peter Grey on bass, Kyle Sahli on keyboards, Bradley Straarup on drums and Ryan Straarup on guitar/vocals.

The band started last year after what was supposed to be a once-off gig turned into a longer-term project, says Staarup. “We all decided we would keep it going,” he added. “We all have a blast playing anyway.”

The band is currently working on an album, harnessing a style they relate to that of Freshlyground. “We combine swing, jazz, pop and contemporary,” Staarup said.

Entrance is R30 and the evening starts at 8 pm at the Red Door.
