Edendale Hospital without running water

2010-06-15 00:00

EDENDALE Hospital’s water taps were dry on Sunday evening and for the better part of yesterday, a source said.

The source said it is not the first time that the hospital has been without water.

Last month, the hospital experienced water cuts more than once, the source added.

“On Sunday evening, the taps were dry from midnight until today [Monday].

“We have been able to run the hospital with water from our reservoir tank and that had to be used sparingly,” said the source, who asked not to be named.

Hospital spokesperson Samke Mncube confirmed that hospital taps had been dry since Sunday evening.

She said they had informed the Msunduzi Municipality about the problem at 11 pm on Sunday.

She denied there were water cuts more than once last month.

“This happened only once last month and it was for a short time. It’s the first time that we have experienced this for a prolonged period. We have since communicated with the municipality and they said they had since fixed the problem,” said Mncube.

She said the back-up tank, which holds 500 000 litres, is able to carry the hospital for three days.

However, Mncube conceded that the water cut had a slight impact on dealing with patient needs.

Earlier in the day, acting municipal manager Thokozani Maseko said the water processing manager was in the area to investigate what the problem was.

By 4pm, the hospital taps had no running water, and Maseko could not be reached by the time of going to press to explain why the problem had arisen and how it was dealt with.
