2010-03-03 00:00

EDENDALE Hospital celebrated its readiness for the World Cup football tournament yesterday.

The provincial Health Department has all the hospitals identifying areas of improvement to enable them to deal with any situation that might arise during the tournament.

Hospital CEO Zanele Ndwandwe said Edendale has had a boost in infrastructure, technological equipment and training of staff in preparation for the event.

The hospital casualty area has been the main focus as it has the capacity to carry about 200 people at a time.

“We have looked at that and certain areas within the hospital were identified to be used in case of overcrowding.

“But we are ready, with our nurses and doctors committing themselves not to take leave during the tournament except for emergencies,” said Ndwandwe.

During celebrations to mark the 100 days countdown yesterday, staff members wore their Bafana jerseys and blew vuvuzelas while two teams of staff members played soccer.

Department spokesman Chris Maxon said their approach is ensure that all hospitals are in a state of readiness.

He said the attention is not only on people inside the stadiums, but also in areas nearby as there will be people gathering in groups celebrating in different ways.
