Edendale Road: two women murdered

2011-03-15 00:00

POLICE are investigating a possible link between the deaths of two women whose bodies were found along Moses Mabhida (Edendale) Road yesterday morning.

One woman was found lying in a ditch near Camps Drift, the other under a tree in the Gomoro area near Plessislaer. The bodies were found between 9.30 am and 10 am.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the woman found at Camps Drift was about 23. Her semi-naked and decomposed body was found by municipal cleaners.

“The deceased was dressed in a black skirt and white blouse. She is of large build, with a medium complexion and short black hair.

At this stage police believe that she was hit on the head with a concrete block which was found next to her body,” she said.

Jeevan said she may have been raped, as her underwear was torn. A post-mortem will be held to determine the cause of death.

No arrests have been made at this stage. Anyone with information about the woman’s identity or that will assist in the investigation is asked to call Detective Warrant Officer Calvin Adimulum of the Pietermaritzburg detective service at 033 845 2760 or 083 658 0482; or Sharmalan Moodley at 083 786 3349.

The woman found in Gomoro has been identified as Malungile Khumalo (23). She had strangulation marks around her neck.

Jeevan said she was found by a passer-by who contacted the police. Police believe she may have been murdered elsewhere.

“Motive is unknown and no arrests have been made at this stage,” said Jeevan.

Attempts to get hold of family members have been unsuccessful.

Anyone with information that will help in the investigation is asked to call Detective Lieutenant-Colonel Mandlenkosi Mlangeni of the Plessislaer Detective Services at 033 398 9756 or 082 557 9226.

Anonymous calls can be made toll-free to Crime Stop at 086 001 0111.

The Witness recently reported the murder of a woman whose body was discovered near a railway line in Nhlazatshe area in Edendale.

On Sunday, 15-year-old Nkosinathi Richard Hlela’s body was discovered in Ashdown.
