Edendale: Youths rally to halt stadium demolition

2008-11-05 00:00

A development set to cost several million rand in Edendale faces growing opposition from a youth organisation.

Machibisa Youth Development (MYD) is upset that a popular soccer venue, Qolokololo Stadium, is on the land earmarked for a R60 million shopping mall.

MYD runs the Machibisa United football club, one of four teams that practise at the stadium.

“If it is demolished we will be forced to forget about soccer. This might lead young people to crime,” said Machibisa United spokesman Njabulo Gcabashe, who is circulating a petition to stop the project.

Soccer activist Alfred “Qokololo” Hlophe, for whom the stadium is named, and the local branch of the South African Football Association also oppose the demolition.

Ward 22 councillor Pat Jaca said the youth group is unlikely to stop the project, which is set to create jobs for city people.
