Edendale: construction of new mall expected to open opportunities

2010-06-21 00:00

PREPARATIONS for the construction of the Edendale Mall started last week, with experts from Johannesburg dismantling the steel structure of the Qokololo Stadium and taking the stands to a nearby football field that is to be renovated.

The new mall will create not only job opportunities for the people of the greater Edendale area, but the area will also have an upgraded stadium with better facilities provided.

It is expected that the dismantling of the stadium will be completed later today, and the steel materials will be taken to the stadium in Ashdown within seven days.

According to Leon Odendaal, the rigger assigned to the task, the structure will be re-assembled into what will be a shiny new sporting facility for the community.

Ward 22 councillor Pat Jaca said the reconstruction of the stadium will be completed before the end of the year.

The renovated new stadium will, said Jaca, be a welcome establishment that he hopes will result in a decrease in drug use and crime among the youth.

Planning for the mall began in 2004 and McCormick Property Development developer Henry Masinga said he is “happy that it is finally happening”.

Construction is projected to begin in August and to be completed in September 2011.

Masinga said about 75% of shop space has been allocated.
