Edendale seeks pioneers’ stories

2013-12-03 00:00

EDENDALE Hospital will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in March next year and the organisers are looking for the families of the pioneers of the hospital to be part of the event.

The hospital is asking for the descendants of the first superintendent Dr J.L. Parker and the first matron E.F. Alexandra to get in touch with them. They are also hoping to find the first baby born at the hospital, who would be 60 years old next year, and anyone else associated with firsts at the hospital.

Pat Bhengu of the organising committee said they know that the first set of triplets were born to M. Mkhize on November 15, 1956.

According to Bhengu, they plan to write up the history of the hospital, so they are looking for anyone who has a story to tell.

Former Natal Witness journalist David Robbins noted in the late eighties that the hospital enjoyed an international reputation as a teaching hospital and attracted young doctors from all over the world.

The hospital’s anniversary will incorporate the official opening of the communicable disease clinic and the new Edendale nursing campus. There will also be a series of lectures, starting with a memorial lecture to honour the first superintendent.

Bhengu has appealed for help in tracing the relatives of the following: Dr D.L. Ranking, Dr Collanbrander, Dr T.M. Adams, Mrs Knox, Mrs H. Williams, the Mkhize family with the first set of triplets and Mrs Beatrice Zondi from Matatiele who gave birth to triplets in 1965.

For more details and if you can put the hospital in contact with the families, please contact Samke Mncube at 033 395 4020 or Samke.Mncube@kznhealth.gov.za.
