Edendale: woman (20) shot as passenger argues with taxi man

2010-10-06 00:00

A 20-YEAR-OLD woman was shot in the stomach when a quarrel broke out between a taxi conductor and a passenger on Monday afternoon.

Police said Nontobeko Shange was a passenger in the taxi, which was travelling from the city centre to Esigodini area, Edendale.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said police were called to the Edendale Main Road where they found the woman with a bullet wound in the stomach.

Jeevan said that when the quarrel broke out about the non-payment of taxi fare, the driver stopped the vehicle and asked the passenger to get out.

The man is alleged to have disembarked and produced a firearm, firing one shot at the conductor.

The bullet narrowly missed the conductor and hit Shange. The man fled the scene on foot.

The woman was rushed to hospital where she is believed to be in a stable condition.

Later in the day police got a tip-off which resulted in the arrest of the 40-year-old suspect in a house in Esigodini.

He was in possession of an unlicensed firearm, which is believed to have been used in the shooting.

The suspect will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court shortly on charges of attempted murder and unlawful possession of firearm.
