Education: ‘99% of non-section 21 schools will have books on day one’

2009-01-07 00:00

Teaching and learning is set to start immediately when schools open in KwaZulu-Natal on January 21, as 99 % of non-Section 21 schools will have received their textbooks and stationery by that day, the KZN Education Department announced yesterday.

“When schools open 3 122 [99%] of non-Section 21 schools will have their textbooks and stationery.

“We have already reached a 98,5% delivery of books for this year,” said Education MEC Ina Cronje.

She added that the outstanding 1,5% in deliveries was due to publishers not being able to deliver on orders that were placed with them — some as early as July 24 last year, she said.

Cronje said that despite these challenges, great strides have been made by the department in ensuring that books and stationery are delivered to schools on time.

“The strides in the delivery of textbooks has moved from 40% in 2006; 80% in 2007; 95% in 2008 and 98,5% delivery for the 2009 academic year.

“The department has indeed sustained the momentum in the delivery of Learning and Teaching Support Materials [LTSM] and has surpassed its own targets.

“The department’s commitment to providing quality education is clearly visible in its efforts … [to] have their textbooks and stationery before or on the first day of school”, she said.

While Section 21 schools procure books and stationery on their own, Cronje said, there are plans to ensure that these schools use their LTSM budget allocation appropriately.
