Education: KZN dept cuts ties with Ithala bank

2010-09-17 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for Education Senzo Mchunu announced yesterday that his department has terminated its relationship with Ithala Bank, due to a number of inefficiencies by the bank.

Delivering his 2009/10 education service delivery report at the legislature yesterday, Mchunu said that the bank has had a few challenges that threatened the delivery of school infrastructure.

“Chairperson, we wish to announce the termination of our infrastructure relationship with Ithala. We took this decision as a result of numerous compliance and delivery challenges within that organisation that threatened our service delivery,” said Mchunu.

He said no new projects will be allocated to Ithala.

“There are currently only four projects that remain with Ithala as contractors had already been appointed. Our uncompromising focus is working to reduce class sizes and in building functional laboratories, schools and classrooms,” Mchunu said.

The MEC said this may see the department reviewing its approach of brick and mortar in infrastructure provisioning.

The Democratic Alliance welcomed the announcement, saying the cancelling of the relationship with Ithala was a “massive” vote of no confidence against the controversial bank.
