Education crisis: students need to know they can do better, says Jansen

2012-05-19 00:00

A CRISIS of leadership and negative perceptions by society were among the academic problems Professor Jonathan Jansen spoke about in a lecture at the Seth Mokiti Methodist seminary in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

During the first Peter Storey annual commemoration lecture, the vice-chancellor and rector of the University of the Free State said South Africa had a crisis of leadership and bad role models.

Jansen said he would like to see South Africa changing its messages about education, especially in making pupils and students understand that they could achieve better results.

“This is not just a crisis in education, but we can still change their minds with constant messages of support. Tell them that they have capacity to grow.”

He said it was not just a probblem for society at large, but one for families “as parents are not there to support and encourage their children because of a crisis of values”.

“In education we need to motivate the youth that they can do better and they will do better if they study and focus on their future. There are a lot of negatives in society that demoralise them. They can do better.”

He pointed to a number of clashes of ideals in South Africa and highlighted nepotism. “My wife and children will not work in the University of Free State when I am still there,” he said.
