Education dept slams principal

2007-11-15 00:00

MEC Ina Cronje said the department has instituted an investigation into the matter. She said children may not be victimised under any circumstances for the non-payment of school fees.

“Our children are not debt collectors and cannot be held responsible for payments of school fees. Furthermore, principals of schools have a duty to assist indigent parents to apply for exemption of school fees if the school is not already a ‘No Fee' school. Where parents are able to pay school fees children may not be used to put pressure on parents,” said Cronje.

Departmental spokeswoman Christi Naude added that the law is very clear that such practice cannot be tolerated.
