Education: new man at the top

2010-10-25 00:00

THE senior manager in service delivery for the KZN Education Department, Simon Mbokazi, is ready to take on the challenge as acting superintendent-general when Cassius Lubisi leaves in November.

Mbokazi will take the helm of KZN education with the matric exams in full swing after Lubisi was poached by the office of the presidency to become the new director-general.

Speaking to The Witness after a media briefing about the state of readiness for the 2010 examinations, Mbokazi said he believes the decision means that the Education MEC, Senzo Mchunu, has confidence in him.

“I have worked with the MEC for some time now. I worked with him when he was still the chairperson of the education portfolio committee and I’ve worked with him in his capacity as MEC, and I feel that I don’t only have his support but the support of others too,” Mbokazi said.

During the briefing, Mchunu wished Lubisi all the best in his new position.

“His contribution in the improvement of education in the province is greatly appreciated.”

Mchunu said Lubisi’s departure won’t affect the system as he is leaving with things in place.

He added that Lubisi had worked closely with other officials and not in isolation, which should make the transition easier.
