Education to sell cars to pay bursaries debt

KWAZULU-NATAL Department of Education vehicles are set to go under the hammer to recover money owed to private higher education institution Sants.

“The sheriff has identified vehicles and these will be advertised on the 24th of February and auctioned on March 3,” Sants spokesperson Kobie Van Zyl said.

The provincial department had failed for over a year to pay more than R36 million in bursaries to the Sants Private Higher Education Institution. This was to fund the tuition of over 1 000 students.

The department has since paid the capital amount of R32 million that was ordered by the high court in November.

However, the interest amount has not been paid.

The interest amounts to just over R4 million, which still needs to be coughed up by the cash-strapped department.

The Pietermaritzburg high court ruled on November 26 that the department was responsible for paying the tuition fees.

Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said the department is attending to the issue.
