Education under the spotlight

2014-08-13 00:00

THE state of education in the country and the way forward will dominate discussions at a national education conference starting in Durban today.

The second annual conference of the South African Education Research Association runs until Friday.

The conference, themed “Researching Education: Future Directions”, will explore the current state of education research in South Africa and look forward to the future directions that research may take.

According to the organisers the conference will also look at how a moral commitment in line with Nelson Mandela’s legacy can be infused into educational research.

Michael Samuel, dean of the education faculty at University of KwaZulu-Natal and chairperson of the local organising committee, said there was a growing consensus among researchers that both theoretical and “practical analysis of educational achievements are needed at all levels of the system.”
