Eight killed in head-on accident

EIGHT people, including a pregnant woman, were killed and three critically injured in a head-on collision between a bakkie and a truck on the N2 north-bound near Mkhuze on Wednesday night.

Transport Department spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said the accident happened when the bakkie, transporting 11 people, “unsafely” tried to overtake a truck, resulting in a head-on collision with a truck in the south-bound lane at about 10 pm.

The injured were taken to Bethesda Hospital, where they are believed to be in critical condition.

Mngomezulu said details of the passengers were not available as investigations are continuing, and it was unclear whether they belong to the same family.

She could only confirm that two occupants were related to each other, while it is assumed that the rest were from the same neighbourhood in

the Ubombo and Umkhuze areas.

The truck driver was uninjured in the incident.

In a separate incident, one person was killed and three critically injured when the vehicle they were travelling in overturned on the R103 near Colenso on Wednesday.

Mngomezulu said the driver was killed, while the injured were taken to Ladysmith Hospital.

She said speed was a suspected cause of the accident.
